Janusz Sokołowski (born October 29, 1921 in Karniszewice, Łask district, died May 18, 1997 in Gdańsk), one of the founding fathers of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk, first rector and honorary doctor of the University of Gdańsk, rector of the Pedagogical University in Gdańsk, member of the Tribunal State in 1989-1991.

He was a graduate of the Faculty of Chemistry at the Gdańsk University of Technology. From 1951, he was associated with the Pedagogical University in Gdańsk. In 1961, based on the results of the analysis of the structure of N-D-glycosyl-p-aminoazobenzene, he defended his doctorate under the supervision of prof. Leon Kamieński from GUT. He obtained his habilitation at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. In March 1968 he was appointed associate professor and in October 1977 full professor. From July 1965 he was the Vice-Rector of the Pedagogical University, and from September 1968 the Rector.

From the ministerial nomination, he was first the organizer, and from July 1970 the first rector of the University of Gdańsk. He remained in the position until 1981. On September 24, 1981, in recognition of his merits, the university senate awarded him the title of honorary rector. At the same time, he headed the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk.

Janusz Sokołowski specialized in organic chemistry. He was the founder of the Gdańsk school of research on nitrogen derivatives of sugars. He published over 200 papers.
