Prof. Andrzej Wiśniewski's Award for his organizational activity for the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Gdańsk

Andrzej Wiśniewski was born on November 16, 1948 in the village of Stary Barkoczyn, Kościerzyna county. He graduated from primary school in Kościerzyna (1961) and Józef Wybicki High School (1965). He studied chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the Pedagogical University of Gdańsk/University of Gdańsk (UG) in the years 1966–1971. On October 1, 1971, he began preparatory assistant studies, and on September 1, 1972, he started working as an assistant at the Higher Teacher Training College (WSN) in Gdańsk. After the dissolution of WSN, he moved to the Institute of Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk, where he joined the Department of Sugar Chemistry. He obtained his PhD degree (1981) at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and his habilitation degree (1993) at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk. He received the title of professor of chemical sciences in 2002.

The Professor's research achievements were in the area of synthesis, isolation and determination of the structure of sugar compounds of synthetic and natural origin. He dealt with the qualitative and quantitative analysis of volatile sugar derivatives, alditols, cyclitols and polyhydroxy compounds in the cerebrospinal fluid, blood and urine. He conducted research on the synthesis and properties of enitols, anhydroalditols, O-glycopyranosides, N-D-glycopyranosyl ammonium salts and diosgenin derivatives. He dealt with the neutralization of chromium and galvanic wastewater.

Scientific achievements of prof. Wiśniewski includes 50 papers, 4 books and 9 patents. Research papers from the team of prof. Wiśniewski were presented by him or his associates at numerous scientific conferences.

He actively participated in the life of the Faculty and the university, performing the functions of: Head of the Department of Sugar Chemistry (2000-2008), Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk for science (2002-2008), Head of the Full-time Doctoral Studies in Chemistry and Biochemistry (2003-2008) and Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry University of Gdańsk (2008-2012).
